4.0 Electric Power

4-1 Transformers

Transformers are network devices that transform voltages from one voltage to another and in some cases are also used to isolate networks and in rare cases, used to change impedances in systems.

Electrical systems become uneconomical if the voltages are not optimised. Ideally, generation, transmission and consumption of power would be done at the highest voltage to minimise the network current. Current (in amps) in systems should be minimised to minimise losses. Large currents require large cables and therefore costly materials like copper.
